October 2025 Membership Meeting ~ Boat Surveying
Susie Gorski | Published on 8/31/2025
Jim Maupin has been surveying pleasure vessels in Port Townsend for the past 20 years, following a 30 year career in marine and general insurance in Seattle and Port Townsend. He spent his 20's in the US Virgin Islands captaining charter boats after getting his USCG license in 1971. Sailing to Europe and back several times, he gained experience in sailing, navigation, vessel maintenance and repair.
Jim will make suggestions on what to do to prepare a boat for survey for sale such as having the engine serviced, vessel cleaned, and listing any equipment that is not functional or in the process of being repaired. Also, what the buyer can do to inspect the boat before hiring a surveyor or spending money on haul out, mechanical inspection or rigging survey.
Married for 40 years to a nationally known sailmaker and father of two sons and grandfather of four young grandchildren ranging in age from 6 to 1 years old who live in Seattle and Olympia, Jim and his wife sail their Cape Dory 27 to Canada and South Puget Sound every summer.
