Jim Maupin has an extensive background in marine insurance and currently provides boat surveys for buyers and sellers. As such he shared his favorite list of things we should all pay attention to as he has seen his fair share of "adventures" of what can and does go wrong. 


Common Survey Recommendations

  • Install bilge pump cycle counter install bilge high water alarm
  • Wooden plugs attached to seacocks
  • Exercise frozen seacocks
  • Replace corroded seacocks
  • Replace all seacock hoses and hose clamps
  • Renew flares with new electronic battery-operated flare
  • Renew fire extinguishers & free the powder in ABC units by shaking the extinguisher regularly to ensure the powder remains free-flowing and ready for discharge during an emergency. 
  • Replace burned shore power receptacle and cord
  • Clean oily bilges and remove all debris that can clog pumps
  • Seal leaking ports and windows
  • Replace wing nuts on batteries with Nyloc nuts
  • Replace wire nuts with butt connectors
  • Replace non-functioning bilge pump float switches
  • Add carbon monoxide detector to sleeping area
  • Add shaft anode(s) to prop shafts with PSS dripless shaft seals
  • Protect 120vac panel back and label high voltage
  • Install a fire port into engine space
  • Replace old propane hose from tank to stove
  • Inspect and replace plastic coated cracked lifelines
  • Get a ‘Lifesling’ & emergency boarding ladder
  • Check navigation lights & replace sun-crazed lenses
