Phishing is back... Remember It's a Scam!

Eileen Baratuci | Published on 4/21/2024
As many of you know, variations on the publicly available club email addresses on our website have been used in an email scam that often results in someone asking you to buy a gift card or several gift cards. This is a SCAM.  We don't ask our members to buy gift cards for anyone, and particularly not via a random email. We are unlikely to say "I have a discrete matter to discuss" or similar phrases designed to make you feel you should not discuss it with anyone.

Scammers may use PTYC Commodore, or something similar, as the sending name on the email, but always check the Reply To address, as that is where the email is coming from.  If the reply to is NOT one of the ten emails used for PTYC business (listed below), or a personal email address from a member (which you can check on our membership roster), then it's a SCAM and you should block the sender and notify your email provider it's a SCAM. You can usually do that in a few clicks.

Neither our website, nor the email accounts related to it, has been hacked.  No member's personal email address is available to the public on the website - only to other logged in members.

If these messages actually have been sent from a member or officer's email address, then notify the webteam at ClubInfo@ptyc.net or the individual whose account is impacted. Although I am hopeful this won't happen again, something like this has occurred three times this year, as well as many times in previous years, to various members of the club. We are sorry this has happened. Be vigilant and never reply to the fraudulent sender!
